Materials

Little Lights NZ has worked hard with suppliers to ensure consistent high quality genuine materials for long lasting pieces.

Gold filled:

Gold filled items are created using a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal through heat and pressure. The gold layer in gold filled jewellery must be at least 5% or 1/20th of the total weight of the item.  Since the thick layer of gold is mechanically bonded with heat and pressure and not simply plated on, the gold doesn’t fade or rub off.  This makes gold filled a popular and affordable alternative to solid gold.  All Little Lights NZ gold filled components are 14kt gold and sourced from reputable manufacturers in the USA.

Gold filled jewellery offers the advantages of solid gold at a more affordable price. With its thick layer of gold bonded to the base metal core, it is durable, resistant to tarnish, and maintains its shine over time making it a great choice for everyday wear.  Here are the pros of gold filled jewellery:

  1. The gold won’t rub off - The layer of gold in gold filled jewellery is bonded to the base metal using intense heat and pressure, meaning its less likely to rub off over time like gold plating. Gold filled jewellery is also at least 5% of its weight, so it has at least 100x more gold than gold plated jewellery.

  2. It is durable - Pure 24k gold is incredibly soft and prone to scratches and dents. But with gold filled jewellery, you get the best of both worlds—durability and beauty. The addition of alloys strengthens the piece, making it more resistant to everyday wear and tear.

  3. It’s cheaper than solid gold - Gold filled jewellery consists of a thick layer of gold that is bonded to a base metal, whereas solid gold jewellery is made entirely of gold. By using a base metal as the core material and applying the layer of gold, it is a fraction of the cost with the same look of solid gold.

  4. It’s easy to care for - since it's naturally tarnish resistant it is easy to care for. If you notice your jewellery is getting dirty from daily wear use a mild soap and water to give your gold filled jewellery a quick wash, dry it with a soft cloth and you're good to go!

  5. It’s versatile - With gold filled jewellery, you've got the best of both worlds.  Since it has a layer of gold bonded to the base metal, it has a similar resemblance to solid gold. That means you can effortlessly mix and match gold filled pieces with your existing solid gold jewellery, expanding your collection.  Hypoallergenic and nickel free, gold filled is the perfect option for those with sensitive skin.

Gold Vermeil:

Gold vermeil, pronounced "ver-may," is a thick layer of gold plating on top of sterling silver. It meets US standards with a minimum of 2.5 microns of gold, making it both dazzling and hypoallergenic for those with metal allergies. The thicker gold plating in vermeil ensures a longer-lasting piece of jewellery than gold plated offers. However, over time and with extensive use, the gold can wear off in high-contact areas.  Little Lights NZ uses mostly gold filled components (above) for this reason.  As listed in some pieces there may be small amounts of gold vermeil beads so we recommend treating all your jewellery with care.

Sterling Silver:

Any of the silver used in Little Lights NZ jewellery is 925 sterling silver.

Freshwater Pearls:

Any freshwater pearls used in Little Lights NZ jewellery are genuine and of high quality. Because they are natural, they will vary in size, shape & colour.  No imitation pearls have been used.

Swarovski Crystals:

All crystals are genuine Swarovski.

Product Care

We only use high quality materials for all of our products including delicate japanese glass beads, genuine Swarovski crystal, quality freshwater pearls, sterling silver, thick 24kt gold plate and 14kt gold filled hardware. Although made with care to be worn every day our pieces are delicate and will last longer if treated with love. Avoid prolonged exposure to chlorine, salt water, soaps, perfumes, body cremes and perspiration to keep your Little Lights shining.
